Thugut, Franz Maria Freiherr von#

b. Linz (Upper Austria), March 31, 1736, d. Vienna, May 28, 1818, diplomat, statesman and interpreter at court. From 1769 envoy in Turkey (cession of Bukovina 1775), later in Naples, Berlin and Warsaw, 1788-1790 High Commissioner in the principalities Moldavia and Walachia, subsequently in Paris and Brussels, from March 27, 1793 until January 16, 1801 in charge of foreign policy and head of the war party in the Napoleonic Wars against revolutionary France; anti-Prussian attitude, 1795 brought about the coalition between Austria, England and Russia. The difficult negotiations at the end of the Second Coalition War against France (1799-1802) eventually led to his fall.
