b. Salurn/Salorno (South Tyrol), April 27, 1710, d. Lakhnau (India), July 5, 1785. Scientist, Jesuit, from 1740 missionary in India, from 1743 rector in Agra (1747-1765 in Narwar); after the dissolution of the order, which was the main support of the mission, he engaged in geographical, astronomical, historical, linguistic and religious studies and investigations into some issues of the natural sciences and passed the results on to scholars in Europe. Drew up the first reliable map of the Ganges area (published 1784). The father of modern Indian geography.
