Transitverkehr#
Transit Traffic: due to its geopolitical location Austria has always been a transit country: the most important transit routes are Transalpine Roads, the Danube axis (Passau - Vienna), the Fernpass transit road (Fernpass, Reschenpass), the Arlberg and Semmering transit routes and the Suedautobahn motorway. A Transit Agreement has been signed by Austria and the European Union (1992) in order to introduce effective measures to fight noise and environmental pollution produced by road transit traffic. The objectives stipulated in the Transit Agreement also formed important points in Austria´s accession negotiations with the European Union. The combined transportation of cargo , especially piggyback services are among the proposed solutions.
