Tunnels#

Tunnels: Most of the Austrian railway tunnels were built before 1918 (168 tunnels with an entire length of 79 km are in use today). Great achievements in tunnel construction after 1945 were the extension of the underground system in the Vienna Underground system and the building of the Inn valley tunnel near Innsbruck.


Mainly because of the increasing number of roads and motorways the number of road tunnels has also been steadily growing since 1967 (in 1995 the entire length of the Austrian road tunnels was 168.5 km).
