Unilever GmbH, Oesterreichische, subsidiary of Unilever NV (Rotterdam), part of one of the world's largest suppliers of branded foodstuffs, cosmetics, detergents, and chemicals. Unilever Austria was established in 1930 after the merger of Margarine Union and Lever, which had taken over Schicht AG in 1928/30. The parent firms Schicht, Kuner, Apollo, Sarg, and Milly had not survived the loss of the Austrian-Hungarian market in 1918. Today companies like Lever Faberge, Diversey Lever, Eskimo-Iglo, Kuner, Elizabeth Arden and Calvin Klein belong to the Unilever group. Most well-known in Austria are the brand names Omo and Coral (washing detergents), Rama, Thea and Vita (margarines), Mentadent (toothpaste), Gloria (hair and body cosmetic articles), Eskimo and Iglo (deep-frozen food products). Turnover 1998: ATS 6.4 billion; 1,100 employees.
