Unzialis#

Unzialis, big Austrian silver coin, archetype of the Taler. Archduke Sigmund "der Muenzreiche" ("rich in coins") was the first to have silver minted into a silver coin at Hall in Tirol in 1486. The silver was taken from the area around the town of Schwaz; the coin weighed as much as an ounce and was equivalent in value to the Goldgulden (therefore also called Guldiner or Guldengroschen). Subsequently adopted in Saxony and the Bohemian town of Jáchymov (Joachimsthal), this heavy coin was ultimately given the name "Taler", which became the generic term for similar coins all over the world.
