Urzidil, Johannes#

Urzidil, Johannes, b. Prague (Czech Republic), Feb. 3, 1896, d. Rome (Italy), Nov. 2, 1970, writer; husband of the poet G. Thieberger. Member of the Prague literary circle (M. Brod, F. Kafka, E. E. Kisch, F. Werfel), after World War I press advisor of the German legation in Prague until 1933, worked on various newspapers. 1939 emigrated to England, 1941 to New York. Worked as a publisher's reader and then for the radio station "The Voice of America". Early expressionist work (Sturz der Verdammten, poetry, 1919). Then studied the history of art and literature (Goethe in Bohemia, 1932). Was especially successful as chronicler of old Prague (Die verlorene Geliebte, 1956; Prager Triptychon, 1960). Grand Austrian State Prize 1964.
