Valentine, Saint, feast day Feb. 14, d. around 269, martyr, Bishop of Terni (Italy). In Austria, Valentine´s Day is held to be a day on which important things happen and is one of the "Lostage", a day determining the weather for the coming season. The custom of giving flowers on this day has only existed in Austria since approximately 1950. Before that, Valentine´s Day was considered an unlucky day, unlike in western Europe, and especially in the USA, where Feb. 14th is considered the day of love and friendship and is celebrated by giving gifts and sending cards.
