Verband Wiener Volksbildung#

Verband Wiener Volksbildung, founded in 1949 as an association, parent organisation of the currently 16 Viennese Volkshochschulen (adult education centres), which are organised on the basis of an association: Volksbildungshaus Wiener Urania, Volkshochschule Margareten, Volkshochschule Wien-West, Gesellschaft fuer Kunst und Volksbildung, Volkshochschule Wien-Nordwest, Kuenstlerische Volkshochschule, Volkshochschule Favoriten, Volkshochschule Simmering, Volkshochschule Hietzing, Volkshochschule Penzing, Volkshochschule Rudolfsheim-Fuenfhaus/Bildungszentrum Aktiv, Volkshochschule Ottakring, Volkshochschule Brigittenau, Volkshochschule Floridsdorf, Volkshochschule Donaustadt, Volkshochschule Liesing. There are another 3 associated societies: Juedisches Institut fuer Erwachsenenbildung (Jewish Institute for Adult Education), Verein zur Geschichte der Volkshochschulen (Association for the History of Adult Education Centres), Schulzentrum Polytechnische Akademie Wien.

The idea of adult education was first put into practice with the foundation of the Wiener Volksbildungsverein in 1887, the Wiener Urania followed in 1897, and the Volksheim Ottakring in 1901. These 3 parent schools provided adult education in several Viennese districts with a network of branches. After 1945 the Volkshochschulen were established as district Volkshochschulen and independent associations and have been members of the Verband Wiener Volksbildung since 1949. In 1994 12,360 courses were attended by 137,073 students; 495,367 people participated in an additional 4,926 events.
