Verkehrsunfälle#

Road Accidents: In 1997, 39,695 road accidents involving personal injury were registered in Austria, 51,591 people were injured and 1,105 were killed. The number of victims of road accidents had been declining steadily until 1996 and began to rise again for the first time in several years from 1997. In the early 1970s, more than 2,000 Austrians lost their lives in road accidents every year, by the middle of the 1980s the number was down to 1,600. It is hoped that the reduction of the allowed maximum blood alcohol content from 0.8‰ to 0.5‰ in 1998 will further reduce the number of road accidents and victims.
