Wüllerstorf-Urbair, Bernhard Freiherr von#
b. Trieste (Italy), Jan. 29, 1816, d. Bozen/Bolzano, (South Tyrol) Aug. 10, 1883, Vice-Admiral. Left the pioneer corps academy at Tulln to become a cadet in the Austrian Navy in 1883; 1839 officer (ensign on a battleship); commander of the naval port of Trieste from 1848-1849; advisor to the Naval Commander-in-Chief Archduke Maximilian Ferdinand from 1855. As commander of the frigate "Novara", sailed around the globe from 1857-1859, during which important scientific findings were made ( Novara Expedition); 1864 commander of the Austrian squadron in its fight against the Danish fleet in the North Sea; Minister of Commerce from 1865-1867; strongly supported the enlargement of the Austrian railway network.
