Waggerl, Karl Heinrich#
b. Bad Gastein (province of Salzburg), Dec. 10, 1897, d. Schwarzach (province of Salzburg), Nov. 4, 1973, writer. Attended teacher training college in Salzburg; participated in World War I; 1939 was provincial leader of writers in the Gau (administrative territory during the Nazi regime) of Salzburg, from 1940 Mayor of Wagrain. In his early narratives tries to depict social differences in a critical manner; in his later works, as well as in his novels "Brot" (1930) and "Schweres Blut" (1932), vitalistic and idealistic description of rural life. Social, political and economic relations are compared to an unchanging natural order. After World War II became well-known for his idyllic short prose (Christmas stories, legends), Austrian State Prize 1934, Austrian Decoration for Science and Art 1967. W. Museum in Wagrain.
