Waldbrunner, Karl, b. Vienna, Nov. 25, 1906, d. Vienna, June 5, 1980, electrical engineer and politician (SPOe, Austrian Social Democratic Party). 1930-1945 senior position in the electro-technical industry. In 1946 envoy and authorised minister in Moscow, 1946-1956 Central Secretary of the SPOe, 1965-1974 deputy chairman of the SPOe, 1950-1973 president of the BSA (Bund Sozialistischer Angestellter/Social Democratic Association of White-Collar Workers). 1949-1956 Federal Minister of Transport and Nationalized Industries, 1956-1962 Federal Minister of Transport and Electricity Supply Industry, in this function was the founding member of the CEMT (Conference of European Ministers of Transport) and 1960-1961 president of the CEMT. 1945-1971 member of the Nationalrat, 1962-1970 2nd president of the Nationalrat and 1970-1971 1st president of the Nationalrat, 1972-1980 1st vice-president of the Austrian National Bank. After 1945 strong advocate of nationalisation, mainly in the fields of heavy industry and energy.
