Itinerant Trade: Since the trade regulations (Gewerbeordnung) of 1973 the principle of fixed shop locations has governed all trade in Austria. There are, however, 3 exceptions: 1) the free trade of the travelling salesmen, 2) "plying for trade", limited to natural products (e.g. fruit, flowers, lavender), and 3) "shops on wheels", e.g. bakers, butchers and grocers ensuring the availability of goods to people in a certain area. In accordance with changing social conditions, the itinerant crafts (knife and cutlery sharpening, mending of pots, sieve-making or "coaster-making") and hawking have thus been reduced to a few sectors.
