Wehrtürme#

Defensive Towers (fortified towers): In the 11th - 13th centuries, when the area near the eastern border was being settled, many villages and even some towns felt the need to fortify towers for defense purposes. Originally many castles consisted only of a defensive tower. In the 16th /17th centuries people again started to build defensive towers in areas threatened by the Turks (e.g. Breitenbrunn, Burgenland).
