Weil, Joseph, Ritter* von Weilen (from 1874), b. Tetin near Prague (Czech Republic), Dec. 28, 1828, d. Vienna, July 3, 1889. Writer, father of Alexander Weil. Began as a travelling actor, from 1848 military career in Vienna, 1852 teacher of History and Geography at the Cadet School of Hainburg, 1854 taught History at the Engineering Academy at Znaim (Znojmo), 1861 scribe at the Imperial Library in Vienna and Professor of German Literature at the War School; 1873 director of the department of acting at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien, which he founded together with S. H. von Mosenthal. Also a writer, 1883 president of the writers' association Concordia.
