Weitzer, Johann#
Weitzer, Johann, b. Friedberg (Styria), Aug. 18, 1832, d. Graz (Styria), Oct. 2, 1902. Industrialist. Started a blacksmith's workshop in Graz in 1854, from 1857 "K. k. priv. Wagenfabrik J. W.". The company produced vehicles for military use as well as for post and ambulance services; it also produced a variety of other vehicles for general use. By 1870 the company already had a staff of 1500 and in 1899 it started to construct diesel engines, while the production of electrically-driven rail vehicles started around 1900. In 1934 the company was taken over by Simmeringer Maschinen- und Waggonbaufabrik AG, which merged with the Pauker works to form Simmering-Graz-Pauker AG.
