Wenter, Josef Gottlieb#
b. Meran/Merano (South Tirol), Aug. 11, 1880, d. Innsbruck (Tyrol), July 5, 1947, writer. Used mainly historical subjects in his dramas, especially the lives of German rulers, to some of whom he attributed larger-than-life mythical qualities ("Der sechste Heinrich", 1921); as a sympathiser of National Socialism, he advocated the rule of the "Fuehrer" in his novel "Spiel um den Staat" (1933). After 1945 W. was rehabilitated and became known as the author of touching and sensitive animal tales.
