Wiesenthal, Simon#
b. Bučač (Ukraine), Dec. 31, 1908, architect; pursuer of nazi criminals. Interned in various concentration camps from 1941-1945. After his liberation from the Mauthausen concentration camp, W. applied himself to tracking down nazi criminals and worked for the U.S. War Crimes Office from 1945-1947; founded the Jewish Documentation Centre in Linz in 1947 (in Vienna since 1961). W.'s constant efforts to bring nazi criminals to justice and keep the memory of Nazi crimes alive has earned him numerous international decorations. In 2000, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest decoration in the USA.
