Winter, Max#
b. Tárnok (Hungary), Jan. 9, 1870, d. Hollywood (USA, buried in Vienna), July 11, 1937, social reformer, journalist. Worked for the social-democratic newspaper "Arbeiterzeitung" from 1895-1930; wrote critical reports on the social situation of the proletarian class in Vienna; 1911-1918 social-democratic member of the Reichsrat; 1919 member of the Vienna Landtag, member of the municipal council of Vienna and Deputy-Mayor. Supported and financially backed the Kinderfreunde organisation. With his project "Muehlstein" he managed to establish libraries for children throughout Austria in 1925. Resigned in 1930; fled to America in 1934, where he continued to fight for the rights of the working class and of children.
