Zand, Herbert#
b. Knoppen (municipality of Pichl-Kainisch, Styria), Nov. 14, 1923, d. Vienna, July 14, 1970, narrative writer, poet, essayist and translator. Was seriously wounded in World War II, lived in Vienna from 1954 and worked as a publisher's reader, worked for the Austrian Society of Literature from 1961. The traumatic war experience is a central theme in his work ("Letzte Ausfahrt", 1953, novel). Death and hopelessness are leitmotifs. His novel "Erben des Feuers" deals with conflicts of postwar society in Vienna (1961).
