Zinnemann, Fred#

b. Vienna, April 29, 1907, d. London (United Kingdom), March 14, 1997, cameraman and film director. Studied music and had a keen interest in photography; became cameraman in Paris and with E. Schuefftan in Berlin. Participated in the German production of "Menschen am Sonntag" (1929), later worked as a director in Hollywood (could not work in Germany because Austrians were not admitted to the German union of cameramen). Had his own production company from 1953, was given commissions for short films and cultural films; director of films with a world-wide reputation, e.g. "High Noon" (1952), "From Here To Eternity" (1953, Oscar), "A Man for All Seasons" (1966, Oscar), "The Day of the Jackal" (1971), "Julia" (1976).
