Part VI - Barbados#

By Rainer Kroisamer: Report from a journey through the Caribbean Seas starting at Puerto Rico,visiting St.Thomas, Sint Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia and Barbados.

The easternmost island of the West Indies, pear-shaped Barbados combines beautiful beaches with ingenuous British charm to produce one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations. The west coast of the island is lined with over 10 miles of white sandy beaches with nicely clear water.



Barbados is mostly a flat coral island, but there are rolling hills and many deep ridges and gullies, with an interesting distribution of flora and fauna. Within the Barbados coral core, there is a vast array of caves and underground lakes which provide an excellent supply of drinking water that is amongst the purest in the Caribbean. Geologically Barbados is unique, being actually two land masses that merged together of many years.

The island is relatively small - only 430 square kilometers, 33 kilometers long by 22 kilometers at its widest. It is divided into 11 parishes or countries - 10 named for saints to the Christian calendar, plus the southern area called Christ Church. All roads lead to or out of the capital Bridgetown.

As every journey comes to an end, we leave Bridgetown, Barbados, and head for our starting point and last port of call again, San Juan de Puerto Rico. This is the end of a fantastic journey through the Caribbean Sea, visiting some amazing places, landscapes, people and their cultures. Travel distance is 511 nautical miles (= 946 kilometers).
