The 40 days of Musa Dagh#

The Armenians, as Christians, living in Turkey never had an easy life. When WWI started, those in the army were discharged. In the night 24/25 of April 1915 some 600 Armenian intellectuals were taken prisoner in Istanbul and soon charged with treason and executed. Villages of Armenians were, one after the other dissolved, their inhabitants without warning sent on a treck into the desert of Syria, most dying along the way, the remainder often dying in internment camps. The torture to walk without substantial food or water and with bloody feet for hundreds of miles was incredible. Many young women jumped from rocks or bridges with their children to death to end the pain.

The first major murder of a whole segment of a population, in most sources called the "first genocide", was under way. Austria and Germany as war allies of Turkey cannot be proud of their roles: they made only meager attempts to help the Christian Armenians against the Islamic forces, since the did not want to risk loosing Turkey to stop Russias attempt to reach the mediteranium!

The Austrian poet Franz Werfel (1890- 1945) wrote a famous book on one of the events during this period: "The 40 days of Musa Dagh". In this novel the true story of an Armenian village on the today Syrian coast at the foot of the mountain Musa Dagh (1335 m, the name meaning "Mountain of Moses") is described: The villagers decided not to go into Turkish captivity but barricaded themselves on top of the mountain. The first attack of Turks was easily repelled, since no resistance was expected. The second attack by a major military force was also won, bloodily, but in the process the villagers got possession of heavy arms to strenghten their defense; the third time a huge contingent of soldiers surrounded the mountain, preventing further supplies of ammunition and food, waiting for the Armenians to be weak enough so that they could easily be attacked and all be killed. This strategy would have succeeded for sure. However, a small group of Armenians thought (mistakenly) they could save their lifes by staging a revolution on top of Musadagh, setting afire the remaining weapons, food and make-shift houses.

The majority of Armenians were desparate: they knew that all was now lost, everyone would be killed. But a French warship noticed fires and fighting on the mountains, and since Turkey was an enemy, they decided to intervene. They thus saved the remaining defenders after 40 days. So it was the betrayal of a small group that started to burn the last reserves of Armenians that actually saved the lives of the remaining 4058 Armenians!
