The Three Gorges Dam at Sandouping is the largest hydroelectric power station in the world. It provides power and controls water flow to prevent floods and to supply water downstream during times of drought.

Its construction forced the relocation of 1.3 million people and the flooding of thousands of cities, towns, and historical sites. This is a view of the reservoir behind the dam.
