Krk#

The island of Krk, krk with 406 km2 (with the about equal sized island of Cres) is the largest Adriatic island and located in Kvarner Bay. More pictures on Kvarner Bay

It is located rather near the mainland and has been connected to it via a 1,430 m bridge a bit south of Rijeka since 1980, one of the longest concrete bridges in the world. Krk is a popular tourist destination, because of the situation and proximity to Slovenia, to the picturesque city of Opatjia, southern Germany, Austria, and northern Italy. Since the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, many tourists have appeared from Hungary, Romania, and other former Eastern Bloc countries.

The largest city on the island is also called Krk . It is located on the southwest coast. This ancient city has been inhabited contuously since Roman times. Roman ruins can be seen today in some parts of the town, for example mosaics in the houses. The city has also preserved many medieval fortifications.

For a short one-day excursion the southernmost tip of the island with the city of Baska may be the first choice, however. It has been a tourist destination since the 19th century, and has developed into a popular resort with good views over the bay of Kvarner to the mainland, numerous beaches and bays for every taste and a dense networked of well-marked hiking trails.

church
The church of St. John the Baptist in Baska. This was the first parish church in the valley, from the 11th century. Its bell tower houses the oldest bell in the area from 1431, called “The Old Man”. The church was abandoned at the beginning of the 19th century, and later restored after an epidemic of cholera. There is a cemetery by the church, where the local people have been buried for centuries. Photo: H. Maurer, 2013
