Between 1619 and 1629, Jan Pieterszoon Coen was two times the cruel General Governor of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Batavia, today's Djakarta, where he established the VOC's dominating position and thus creating the basis for later Dutch East Indies. He was responsible for the destruction of the city of Jakarta, which he had burnt down in 1619, and a punitive expedition against the Banda Islands in 1621, together with the execution of its local merchants, to secure the monopoly for the spice trade.
