4 Case Studies
4.1 RetroBrain R&DGmbH:MemoreBox
Germanyâs FederalMinistry ofHealthâsHealth InnovationHub responded, among
others, to theCOVID-19 pandemic by compiling a list of recommendable âDigital
Toolsâ, which eithermitigateCOVID-19directly or help address itswider societal
impact (Health InnovationHub2020).Oneof the companiesmentionedon this list
is digital-therapeutics company RetroBrain R&D, a spin-off of Humboldt-
UniversitĂ€tâs Cluster of Excellence. RetroBrain R&D develops a fully gesture-
controlled video game console named âmemoreBoxâ, which has been called âa
benchmark in the therapeuticgamiïŹcation industryâ (LIFTBasel2015).Theoverall
goal of RetroBrainâs solution is to extend the quality of life of the elderly by
developing state-of-the-art, evidence-based therapeutic video games. The video
game systemâclassiïŹed as a class 1 medical deviceâsupports the prevention of
typical age-related diseases and accompanies the therapy of diseases such as
dementia or Parkinsonâs disease.
