We would also like to express our appreciation to Associated
Medical Services (AMS) for its generous financial support enabling
the publication of this book and for recognizing the importance of this
work at such a critical juncture in Canadian history.
And very special thanks to our peer reviewers: Professor Jocelyn
Downie (Dalhousie University), Professor Greg Marchildon (University
of Toronto), Professor Judy Fudge (McMaster University), Professor
Alana Klein (McGill University), Professor Jean Leclair (Université
de Montréal), Professor Catherine Régis (Université de Montréal),
Professor Maxime St-Hilaire (Université de Sherbrooke), Professor
Signa Daum Shanks (Osgoode Hall Law School, York University),
and Professor Emma Cunliffe (University of British Columbia). Each
took many hours at an extremely busy time for academics to provide
reviews for the book and help us improve our analysis.
Finally, we dedicate this book to the hundreds of thousands
whose lives were and will be lost prematurely to COVID-19; to the
health care workers, caregivers, and front line responders who have
accepted increased risk to their own health and life to care for others;
and to all those harmed by COVID-19 and the responses. The des-
tiny of humanity is interconnected and precarious. In that context, we
have sought to shine a light on a new vulnerability and how some are
much more vulnerable than others.
