Ärztekammern#
Austrian Medical Associations, established by law in 1891 as the professional representative bodies for physicians. As a result of the Aerztegesetz (Law on Physicians) of 1989 there are Medical Associations in the federal provinces as well as the Austrian Medical Association in Vienna, whose General Assembly consists of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the Provincial Medical Associations and ombudsmen for self-employed and non-self-employed physicians, dentists belonging to all the Provincial Medical Associations, Federal ombudsmen and their representatives. The medical associations have the mandate to represent and promote the common professional, social and economic interests of the physicians as well as to ensure the integrity of the profession´s reputation and adherence to a common professional ethos. Their expenses are covered by membership fees; the Associations are supervised by the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs.
