Altenmarkt im Pongau, province of Salzburg, market town in the district of St. Johann, alt. 843 m, pop. 3,046, area 48.63 km2, winter sports centre in upper Ennstal Valley. - Provincial youth hostel, day clinic, skiing museum; biseasonal tourism (570,000 overnight stays, predominantly winter tourism), timber processing, ski factory, knitwear factory. - Altenmarkt is known as the oldest settlement in the Ennstal Valley, originally Roman ("Ani"), called "Rastat" until the 13th century; deanery church (end of 14th century) with Madonna (limestone, 1393) and Pietà (1394); old Alpine Paarhoefe and Haufenhoefe (types of farmhouse). One of the few charnel-houses in the province of Salzburg ("Annakapelle", 1395) is located in Altenmarkt - The ski area around Lake Zauchensee with gondola cableway ("Schwarzwandbahn") up Gamskogel mountain (2,186 m) are in the vicinity.
