Augensteinlandschaft#
Augensteinlandschaft (also called "Raxlandschaft"), remnants of an old landscape especially conspicuous in the northern limestone Alps; formed into high mountains in the middle Tertiary period around 25 million years ago, even before the formation of the Alps; charcterised by the occurrence of rock types foreign to the area ("Augensteine") on high plateaus and in caves (e.g. Schafberg mountain, Upper Austria; Dachstein caves).
