Bearded Vulture, the bearded vulture died out in the Austrian Alps some 100 years ago. Since 1986, attempts have been undertaken to resettle the birds in the Hohe Tauern Mountains. Before they become full-fledged, young birds are put into manmade aeries and fed for some time, so that they can get used to their new home. 19 bearded vultures had been released by 1993. Bearded vultures live above the timberline and feed mainly on carrion and particularly bones.
