Gruenau im Almtal, Upper Austria, municipality in the district of Gmunden, alt. 528 m, pop. 2,137, area 229.95 km2, bi-seasonal holiday resort (138,318 overnight stays, mainly summer) situated at the confluence of the Gruenaubach stream and the Alm river, east of Lake Traunsee; in terms of area, largest municipality in Upper Austria. - Forestry inspectorate of the District Commission, young people´s hostel, Marienheim home (Order of the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel), aerial ropeway to the Kasbergalm pastures (Kasberg mountain alt. 1,747 m), 6 km south of Gruenau, near Fischerau, wildlife sanctuary of the Herzog-von-Cumberland Foundation.
