Hanslick, Eduard#
b. Prague (Czech Republic), Sept. 11, 1825, d. Baden (Lower Austria), Aug. 6, 1904, very influential music critic in Vienna, aesthetician and musicologist; from 1856 lecturer, from 1861 university professor of aesthetics and music history in Vienna (1st professor of music at the university following its reform in 16th century). In his opinion music in classical and neo-classical style (W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, R. Schumann, J. Brahms) was the climax of musical development and he disapproved of music in Neo-German style.
