Heeresgeschichtliches Museum#
Museum of Military History, built 1850-1856 by L. Foerster and T. Hansen in the Moorish-Byzantine style as a "weapons museum" together with the Arsenal, impressive cupola, oldest museum building in Vienna, open to the public since 1869. From 1891 known as the "K. u. k. Heeresmuseum" after the weapons section had been transferred to the new Kunsthistorisches Museum. Heavily damaged during World War II, renovated 1946-55 and reopened by stages from 1955 to 1961 as Museum of Military History. On show are exhibits of Austrian military history from the Thirty Years´ War until 1945. One room is dedicated to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Contemporary issues are presented in special exhibitions. A research institute of military history is affiliated to the museum. It is subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Defence.
