Hernstein#

Hernstein, Lower Austria, municipality in the district of Baden, alt. 438 m, pop. 1,305, area 46.59 km2the Piesting valley, north of the Hohe Wand mountain. Economic activity centred on agriculture, some tourism; sand quarry. Hernstein Palace (now a seminar hotel), 1856-80 alterations by T. Hansen in the English Gothic style, paintings by C. Griepenkerl, C. Rahl, E. Bitterlich and examples of the arts and crafts from the late 19th  century. Hernstein Fortress ruins behind the palace, keep from the 12th  century
