Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis#
Hofkirchen im Muehlkreis, Upper Austria, market town in the district of Rohrbach im Muehlkreis, alt. 601 m, pop. 1,427, area 22.69 km2, small commercial and industrial town north of the Danube valley, close to the German border. Shoe factory, turbine construction, wood-working industry, some summer tourism. First documented mention around 1200; Baroque parish church (1704-39), high altar (1727), rebuilt after a fire in 1764. Market village with houses typical of the Muehlviertel region and town hall (with arcades, stairs), pillory (17th century), fountain (1675). Marsbach Palace (1561-68), Haichenbach ruins; Kerschbaumerschloessl palace. Rannariedl castle, keep and great hall from the 13th century, extensions from the 16th century. Falkenstein ruins in the Rannatal valley, first documented mention 1140, owned by the Falkenstein family until 1227, extensions from the 16th century, 1571 fire, fell into disuse after 1860; parts from the 13th century (keep, great hall) and from the late-Gothic period (water tower) have been preserved. In the vicinity, Ranna power station (built 1925, 19 MW, municipality of Neustift).
