Internet, global computer network, the most import service of which is the World Wide Web. The most important Austrian media as well as numerous companies are represented in the Internet, as are the universities and many schools and museums. All in all 28,000 Austrian domain names were registered in the Internet in 1998. The interests of Austrian internet providers are represented by Internet Service Provider Austria (ISPA), more than 80% of the approx. 100 Austrian internet providers are members. Further services offered by the internet as a medium of communications are the electronic exchange of messages (e-mail) and so-called newsgroups (electronic discussion forums), among others. An Austrian development is the HyperWave system, which was developed under H. Maurer at the Graz University of Technology. One of its uses is the electronic presentation of Austria in the Internet under the name AEIOU. Commissioned by the Ministry of Science, this web site was developed in 1996 to mark the millennium of Austria; its key element is the Encyclopedia of Austria.
