Karlik, Berta#
Karlik, Berta, b. Vienna, Jan. 24, 1904, d. Vienna, Feb. 4, 1990, physicist. Studied at the university of Vienna, from 1929 worked at the radium institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which was under her management from 1945-1975; from 1956 university professor; studies of alpha rays, fluorescence phenomena and luminescence phenomena (with S. Meyer and K. Przibram). 1942 she proved the natural occurrence of the element astatine, atomic number 85, with T. Bernert-Cless, closing the last gap in the periodic system.
