Sewage Treatment Plants, waste water clarification plants. For reasons of hygiene, waste water from households and industry in enclosed settlement areas is collected in sewage systems and, before being discharged into rivers and lakes, subjected to a biological clarification process using oxybiotic bacteria.
As of 1994, about 76 % of the population in Austria was connected
to biological sewage treatment plants (over 95 % to about 1000
plants serving over 500 residents each). The number of smaller plants
is increasing rapidly. Most sewage from business and industry is also
clarified biologically. Sewage treatment plants have resulted in a
great improvement in the biological quality of Austria's Rivers and
Streams..
