Leiser Berge#

Leiser Mountains, Lower Austria, small, steep limestone mountains near Ernstbrunn, rising above the low hill area of the Weinviertel region. Buschberg mountain (491 m), Steinberg mountain (452 m) Michelberg mountain (407 m), Staatz cliffs, Falkenstein Mountains and Leiser Mountains are the remains of the submerged connection between the Alps and Carpathian Mountains. The "Leiser Berge" conservation area was opened in 1970, it extends from the Ernstbrunn game park to the Oberleiser mountain (457 m, observation point) and comprises 4,500 hectares. - Oberleiser mountain has been populated since the New Stone Age, in 2nd and 1st century B.C., Celtic settlement (oppidum) of the late La-Tène culture, which minted its own coins; buildings in Roman style from the middle of the 2nd century A.D. (possibly residence of a Germanic vassal prince); settlement dating from late Antiquity; burial grounds of Christianised Slavs (10th and 11th centuries). - Romanesque church, new Gothic church building, closed down and demolished under the reign of Joseph II.
