Air Transport: Austrian civil air transport is controlled by the following institutions: Federal Ministry of Science and Transport, Austro Control Ges. m. b. H. - Air Traffic Control (formerly: Federal Civil Aviation Office), the provincial governors, Austrian aviation companies ( Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air, Rheintalflug), Tyrolean Airways, and the Airports.
The first Austrian Aviation Law dates back to 1919, the present law
became effective in 1958 (with several amendments); Austria is a
member of the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, since
1948 it has been a member of the International Air Transport
Association (IATA) and the Federation Aeronautique Internationale
(FAI), which comprises all associations of private pilots.
Holders of a pilot license in Austria as of December 31, 1995: 5,078
private pilots, 2,180 professional and airline pilots, 407 helicopter
pilots, 225 free balloon pilots, 3,870 glider pilots, 905 parachutists
and 6,930 special pilots (hang and paragliders).
