Mailberg#
Mailberg, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Hollabrunn, alt. 217m, pop. 598, area 15.74 km2. Economy: agriculture and vine-growing. Mailberg is situated in the north-western part of the Weinviertel region to the east of Buchberg hill (417 m). - Palace vineyard, a wine cellar and a museum owned by the Order of the Knights of Saint John. - First documented mention of Mailberg in 1055; in 1082 Margrave Leopold II suffered defeat against the Bohemians near Mailberg - Sights: Parish church (originally Gothic with Baroque elements) which forms part of the palace and houses Gothic carved statues and a relief of the Lamentation of Christ (early 16th century), cemetery church with a Romanesque and Gothic nave and a winged altar (around 1460-1470), the palace (mainly medieval with Renaissance and Baroque alterations) which became the home of the Order of the Knights of Saint John in 1145/50 and was turned into a commendam later on (the oldest one of Austria); numerous wine press buildings (dating from the 18th and 19th centuries).
