Marbach an der Donau#

Marbach an der Donau, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Melk, 240 m, pop. 1,620, area 10.65 km2, situated on the River Danube near the place of pilgrimage of Maria Taferl. The region around Marbach is referred to as Nibelungengau. Landing stage of the Danube Steamship Company (DDSG).- Recreational facilities, including a harbour for sports boats; social relief service; ferry service since 1983. Economy: furniture trade, sawing mill, car companies, summer tourism. First documented mention of Marbach an der Donau in 1269. - 19th century parish church with a choir and a south tower both built in Gothic style, 17th century nave, 18th century interior; manor (1575) with rooms added to the western part of the building by C. Holzmeister (1915-1917); office rooms in the town hall (mainly dating from the 16th century) have stuccoed ceilings; pillory (first documented mention in 1629).
