Marchfeldkanal#
Marchfeld Canal, Lower Austria: To prevent the ground water level in the Marchfeld region from sinking further (decline of 50 cm annually in both 1983 and 1984), the building of an interconnected water network based on the natural surroundings commenced in 1983. At the market town of Langenzersdorf water is branched off from the Danube and distributed into the Marchfeld via Russbach stream, Obersiebenbrunn canal and Stempfelbach stream near Deutsch-Wagram, where an infiltration system has been installed and the Stempelbach stream integrated into the canal Direct uptake and groundwater enrichment at several sites relieve the ground water system. The Marchfeld Canal is considered an outstanding example of water management which takes into account ecological considerations.
