Maria Laach am Jauerling#
Maria Laach am Jauerling, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Krems an der Donau, alt. 591 m, pop. 923, area 36.44 km2, situated on the southern slopes of Jauerling Mountain (alt. 960 m) in the southern part of the Waldviertel (one of Lower Austria´s four main regions). - Nature reserve stretching from Jauerling Mountain to the Wachau (Lower Austrian region famous for its wine production, situated along the River Danube), outlook tower affording an impressive panoramic view of the region, museum of herbs, VHF transmitter (at the top of Jauerling Mountain) operated by the Austrian Broadcasting Network (ORF); timber processing. Market town, old place of pilgrimage.- Late Gothic parish church (15th century), became a recognized place of pilgrimage in the 18th century, organ gallery (around 1500) with a balustrade richly ornamented with tracery, Late Gothic double winged altar (1480) constituting a rare example of well-preserved Late Gothic carvings and paintings, side altar (by the Passau workshops around 1500) with a Gothic altar piece (around 1475), stone pulpit (around 1500), Renaissance tomb of J. G. von Kuefstein (created by A. Colin between 1604 and 1607), hatchments of members of the Kuefstein family (Tirolean noble family).
