Maria Rain#

Maria Rain, Carinthia, municipality in the district of Klagenfurt Land, alt. 552 m, pop. 1,758, area 25.48 km2, place of pilgrimage and popular destination for day trippers south of the town of Klagenfurt, situated above the Ferlach reservoir.- Timber processing, publishing company. Baroque parish and pilgrimage church (rebuilt between 1700 and 1729) situated high above the River Drau/Drava, two church towers with onion helms, large 17th century fresco of St. Christopher painted on the north walls of the church, high altar (1694) with a Gothic statue of the Virgin (mid-15th century), retable of a Roman tomb altar used as an offertory box, various chapels (Tomb-of-Mary chapel, St. Joseph chapel, Flagellation chapel (Rosalienkapelle), Holy Sepulchre chapel). Filial church at the village of Unterguntschach, 14th century murals.
