Mayrhofen#
Mayrhofen, Tirol, market town in the district of Schwaz, alt. 633 m, pop. 3,679 (3,270 in 1981), area 178.77 km2, bi-seasonal holiday resort (1,295,305 overnight stays) situated in the Ziller Valley; terminus of the Zillertalbahn narrow-gauge railway. - Customs station, Europahaus conference centre, youth centre, sports centre, fun baths with long water slides etc., wild water canoeing, school of mountaineering, adult education centre, commercial school, cableways to the top of Penken Mountain (alt. 2,095 m), Filzenalm Mountain (alt. 1,955 m, Ahorn Cableway), and Hoarbergalm Mountain (also called Hoarbergkarspitze Mountain, alt. 2,278 m). Near Mayrhofen are various power stations, e.g. the Mayrhofen storage power station (1969, 345 megawatts), the Haeusling storage power station (1986, 360 megawatts, part of the municipality of Brandberg), the Rosshag storage power station (1970, 231 megawatts, near the village of Ginzling, part of the municipality of Finkenberg), the Boesdornau power station (1930, 25.3 megawatts, part of the municipality of Finkenberg). In 1956 the region around Penken Mountain was declared a nature reserve; since 1948 a summer school for students from all over the globe has been organized at Mayrhofen. Production of lemonade, sawing mill, timber processing. - Parish church, nave (1968-1969) designed by C. Holzmeister, choir and north tower both created in the Gothic style, fresco (1745) and high altar (around 1750) designed in the Baroque style, fresco (1971) by M. Weiler. -The Zillergruendl reservoir, the Stillup Ravine with its picturesque waterfalls, the Stillup reservoir and the Schlegeis reservoir (with a dam of 131 m in height and 750 m in length) are all situated near Mayrhofen
