Micheldorf in Oberoesterreich, Upper Austria, market town in the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems, alt. 465 m, pop. 4,870, area 50.30 km2, commercial and industrial centre in the upper Kremstal valley. - 1,722 persons employed (1991), about 71 % of which in trade and industry: mechanical engineering, plastics technology, moulding, and wood processing (furniture and parquet factories) industries, spun concrete plant, metal working industry, (toolmaking, machine building, furnace manufacture); shopping centre, tourism. - In former times centre of scythe production (16th to 19th centuries), old scythe shops with late Baroque gable façades. Scythe shop museum; parish church of St. Josef, built 1946-1953. On Georgenberg Hill (594 m), fortifications of the La Tène culture and of Late Antiquity; in the choir of the Gothic subsidiary church, converted in Baroque style, the apse of an early Christian or Romanesque church has been exposed; graves from the 9th /10th centuries; "Pfusterkreuz" cross (1735) of wrought iron; Altpernstein Castle (first documented mention in 1147), from the 16th /17th centuries, with knights´ hall, kitchen and armory, castle chapel with stucco work (1626); traditional Georgiritt (St. George procession on horseback).
